Cast in Utrecht in 1544 as a gift to Henry VIII from Maximilian von Egmont, Count Buren a Commander in the service of Charles V of France. The gun could fire for up to one and a half miles; the old wooden carriage was replaced by the metal one in the photograph which was reputedly cast from a small cannon brought back as trophies from the field of Waterloo. Information from Soldiers of the Castle, Dover Castle Garrisoned by G.M.Atherton and English Heritage Guide for Dover Castle.
